As Chair of Illustration, I invited numerous illustrators to MICA. Their time there was customarily met with a well designed poster announcing their lecture, crit or gallery talk. In addition, students shows required smart looking graphics. That’s where I come in...

Brodner Residency

Art Direction and Design: Whitney Sherman
Illustration : Steve Brodner

Steve Brodner was in-residence for 3 days in the MICA Illustration Department. He is a consummate critic and did some showing off on his caricaturing abilities!

Mike Duffy Talk

Art Direction and Design: Whitney Sherman
Illustration : Mike Duffy

Mike Duffy was in-residence for 2 days during the installation of the Another Voice exhibit. Check out the Exhibition section of the site to see his giant heads with TV screen in their mouths. His stencil art was also used to create the surface designs for the Another Voice Reading Area. For Mike’s poster I took cues from his bold art and opinions on politics.

Knock Out : The R. Gregory Christie Residency

Art Direction and Design: Whitney Sherman
Illustration : R. Gregory Christie
I mounted an exhibition for shildren and young adults book illustrator Greg Christie. He also gave crits and discussed students portfolios one-on-one. His lecture was attended by Baltimore City school children. The poster takes it’s name from the great art Greg provided.

Jerelle Kraus Lecture

Art Direction and Design: Whitney Sherman
Illustration : Rafal Olbinski
For my History of Illustration class, I invited Jerelle Kraus to talk about influences of Eastern European artists on Op-Ed art. This poster was designed to resemble a tabloid newspaper page.

Layer Cake

Art Direction and Design: Whitney Sherman
This show was named as such because it was in 2 separate gallery spaces stacked on top of each other. Delicious!

Señor Show

Art Direction and Design: Whitney Sherman
This poster rifts off the ubiquitous HELLO nametags that crop up where even folks feel the need to get on a first name basis. It also plays with the misunderstood sound of it being the show for our seniors, or what we call the Senior Show. I guess it could have also been an AARP membership card!

WorkPlay

Art Direction and Design: Whitney Sherman
Illustration : Whitney Sherman

This poster for my lecture at Delaware College of Art and Design toys with the idea that some things are generated from outside the studio and others happen all by themselves inside the studio. The poster is designed to hang right side up and upside down. It is filled with handlettering which I enjoy doing immensely.
